What Is Spiritual Coaching?

Spiritual coaching is a soul-centered way of creating dedicated space for your inner life. It helps you slow down enough to hear yourself, notice what is stirring beneath the surface, and tend the deeper rhythms shaping your life. Rather than giving answers, it invites you to live into your own questions — with curiosity, honesty, and a sense of the sacred.

Spiritual coaching is not about leveling up or getting more. It’s not about making a vision board, mapping out goals, or checking off boxes. It’s not type A: “I shall be the best at Spiritual!” It’s more type F: “F*ck if I know what’s going on here — but I’m listening.”

Spiritual coaching can help you regain a sense of wonder and awe. It can make room for the wounds, questions, and desires that do not fit neatly into everyday conversation. At heart, I think spiritual coaching is a kind of soul-tending… companionship for the part of you that longs for something more real, more alive.

I know “spiritual” can feel loaded. It is one of those words that feels both overused and undervalued. The word comes from the Latin “spiritus,” meaning breath, air, inspiration. So… I think of it as the life force stirring in all things, and the practice of noticing what gives our lives depth and meaning. For me, “spiritual” lives outside labels, doctrine, or dogma.

In a world that urges us to speed up, spiritual coaching invites a slowing down. It offers a way to check in with your Self through a humble, ordinary rhythm of practice… whether daily, monthly, or once in a season.

“The times are urgent; let us slow down.” – Bayo Akomolafe

Finding the Sacred in the Ordinary

We are awakening to the crisis of the earth and the effect of the loss of the sacred feminine, but few people understand that the causes of the crisis have spiritual values at their roots — values of the sacred as immanent, imbued in all of life, and all life as interdependent.”

– Lama Tsultrim Allione

We live most of our lives in ordinary moments, and to me, those moments are where I find the miraculous. My version of spiritual coaching is rooted more in “immanence” — recognizing the sacred within the everyday, within matter, within ordinary life — than in transcendence, which points beyond it.

For sure, a transcendent, mystical dissolving of self can absolutely be luminous and nourishing. But I believe what many of us most need right now is to remember the holiness of the ground beneath our feet, the bodies we inhabit, and the Earth we belong to. The holiness of the ordinary.

A Soul-Centered Approach to Coaching

My approach is soul-centered, nature-rooted, and animist. It honors your inner rhythms and the wider cycles of life. Spiritual coaching recognizes that life is more than tasks and timelines… it is mythic, messy, rhythmic, and cyclical.

We might work with ritual, tarot, poetry, body wisdom, or the symbols that keep appearing in your life. We might talk about ancestors, aliveness, spiritual dryness, or the ache you can’t quite name. We might explore what is losing life, what is asking for attention, and what wants to be fed.

We might anchor ourselves in new moons and full moons, astrological archetypes, seasonal movements and celebrations, storytelling, and poetry — not as dogma, truth, or the right way, but as context and container: a place to hang our hats so we can go deep…

Client reflection
“You were brilliant and inspired in your coaching. I am grateful for your presence, compassion, insights and skill. Thank you for listening, hearing, and seeing me — and in doing so helping me listen, hear, and see myself more clearly.”

Who Is Spiritual Coaching For?

Spiritual coaching can be especially supportive for people moving through life transitions, grief, spiritual dryness, creative limbo, or midlife change… or for those who sense something deeper stirring and are not quite sure what to do with it.

  • For those looking to begin or nourish a seasonal, rhythmic, animist practice.
  • For those longing for a grounded spiritual practice that can actually live inside ordinary life.
  • For those who are awakening to something deeper, but don’t know what comes next.
  • For those looking to integrate peak experiences so that they inform your daily life.
  • For those who sense the aliveness in trees and rivers and silence, but aren’t sure how to live from that place.
  • For those who are tired of performing, and ready to be real.

What Happens in a Spiritual Coaching Session?

Each session is a spacious conversation. Sometimes we begin with a breath, a poem, or a check-in with the body. We follow what’s alive. For example, if we are working the moon cycles together, we might play with the archetypal energy of the lunation, use tarot as a reflective tool, and we may work on the intentions that are bubbling up from your depths.

We might track symbols, dreams, triggers, and glimmers. We may sit with a question that has no quick answer.

There’s no rigid agenda. Only an invitation to bring your whole self — your longing, your stuckness, your wonder — and see what it wants to say.

Jen’s Worldview (in extra brief)

My practice is shaped by 25 years of ritual work, ceremonial practice, and an animist worldview. (Don’t even try and tell me that my childhood Snoopy was not full of life, hearing my prayers.) I draw from Jungian ideas, joy work, grief work, feminine cycles, seasonal and lunar cycles, earth-based spirituality, dreamwork, poetry, and the old stories. I am deeply reverent, and completely irreverent. I’ll be the first to admit I have no idea what this whole life thing is about. I also find life to be meaningful, amazing, humbling, soul crushing and soul expanding, and I feel it is extraordinary that I am a life form on planet earth.

I’m not here to lead you somewhere. I’m here to walk beside you as you remember your own way. I think your soul already knows where it wants to go, and what it loves.
